Why are snoods a great choice?
In my opinion, when it comes to stylish warmth, a handwoven snood is the perfect go-to accessory. Versatile, functional, and arguably effortlessly chic, snoods offer a modern twist on the classic scarf. They provide warmth without the hassle of constant readjustment. Whether you're braving the winter chill, seeking a lightweight option for outdoor activities, or opting for a stylish indoor look, a snood is an excellent choice on all fronts. In this blog, I'll share some images of my own snood-wearing exploits, explore why I'm often seen wearing one, and explain why I believe they are the ultimate accessory.
Snoods are stylish
Snoods are more than just a practical warm accessory—they are a fashion statement. While I will be the first to admit that I may not be the most fashionable dresser, I do enjoy coordinating a snood with my coat, jacket, or even waterproof. Snoods can be chunky, patterned, lightweight, or thick, and of course, they come in a wide range of colours. With a little searching, you are sure to find a snood to perfectly match your outfit.
Fast fashion (but not as we know it!)
As a creator of handwoven luxury accessories, I wouldn't describe a snood as fast fashion in the usual sense. Weaving a handwoven fabric for a snood, shawl, or scarf is a slow process, involving many hours of skill development, followed by the design and creation of the final accessory. So, what do I mean by 'fast fashion'? It's the ability of a snood to be slipped over your head, instantly adding style in a fashionable way. Snoods are incredibly easy to wear, with no folding, knotting, or wrapping required.
Snoods keep you warm indoors but are also very practical
As a weaver working from home, I can often be found wearing a few layers and a snood indoors. It minimizes the need to have the heating on all day, which is definitely a good thing. While working, I’m often leaning over my loom, whether I am actively weaving or just setting up the loom, so one of the big advantages of a snood is that there’s nothing dangling to get in the way.
Is a wool or cotton snood best?
A snood sits close to the skin, so if you are sensitive to wool and concerned about itchiness, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. For those very sensitive to wool, cotton, Tencel, or bamboo are the best options. If you prefer wool for its warmth, it’s still important to consider the type of wool your snood is made from. Different wool varieties can feel very different, which is why I predominantly weave with fine merino lambswool. A snood made from these fibers is a luxurious option, likely to be enjoyed by most people.
Perfect for all seasons but great in winter
While snoods are often associated with winter, they make a great accessory all year round, except perhaps on the rare very warm days of summer in the UK. Merino lambswool snoods are popular in winter for their added warmth, while cooler, thinner cotton snoods are ideal for late spring and summer.
Ideal for outdoor activities (dog walking)
I am delighted when people purchase and enjoy wearing one of my snoods. It's not uncommon for them to share that they use their snood daily while walking their dog—I do exactly the same. I find it easy and quick to put on, with the option to remove it just as quickly and tuck it into my pocket if I warm up while chasing the dog!
Easy and small to carry in case the chill sets in
The compact size of a snood means it can be easily folded and carried in a bag or pocket when you're not wearing it. This allows you to always have a snood on hand, ready to add extra warmth and style whenever the need arises.
A snood is a great gift
At events and online, snoods are my best-selling item. I handweave snoods in a wide range of fabrics, designs, and colours, so most people can find one to suit their intended recipient. They’re easy to wrap and can even be posted as a large letter, saving on expensive postal costs.
Embrace the snood but don't forget about scarves and shawls
I believe snoods are here to stay for all the reasons I’ve discussed in this blog. Whether you're looking for something to keep you warm in winter, protect you from the elements during outdoor activities, or simply add a touch of style to your outfit, a snood is a perfect choice.
That said, there’s still a place for scarves and shawls, too. As a weaver, it probably won’t surprise you to know that I have a large selection of all these accessories, each one perfect for different occasions.
