Emma Baker - Textile Artist and Handweaver

emma-baker-handwoven-textiles

Emma is a weaver and textile designer, based in Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK.  She is predominantly self taught and specialises in creating contemporary, one of a kind accessories, including scarves, snoods and shawls. Each piece is meticulously handwoven on a traditional floor loom or table loom using luxurious yarns including fine merino lambswool, Tencel or cotton.  Emma's work embodies a harmonious blend of modern design and time-honoured weaving techniques, resulting in unique, high-quality items that serve as both stylish accessories and thoughtful gifts.  Her commitment to craftsmanship ensures every creation is woven with care, attention to detail with an investment of time in its design and creation.

Emma weaves on a large 8 shaft floor loom and smaller rigid heddle looms and whilst her most frequent weaving yarn is merino lambswool she also creates a limited number of pieces using yarn which has been hand processed and spun, from local sheep and alpaca fleeces.   A favourite design uses a deflected doubleweave weaving technique where coloured yarns are interchanged to give a reversible pattern with a striking patterned and colourful appearance.

Emma lives on the boundary of the New Forest and her creative process is deeply influenced by the natural world in that environment.  Regular walks through the ancient woodlands and open heathlands during each season provide inspiration for her use of colours and textures on the loom.

Emma also works with fellow weaver Gillian Siggers as TabbyandTweed.  Together they run weaving workshops which are detailed on the workshop page.  To keep in touch with what is on the loom, off the loom, new handwoven products along with events that Emma attends and workshop dates sign up to receive  weaving news.
